I am truly honored to be the Youth Director here at First UMC Decatur! God has been with me since I was 19 in my own Youth Group back home in Panama, leading me and teaching me all the gifts, talents, and experiences I needed to become the Youth Pastor here! We are new to Chico and Wise County, but not to Texas or the United Methodist Church!
Although this is a part-time position, my WHOLE heart is in this! I believe serving here is where God has called me to be.
When I was 19, I came to know God personally. And ever since, I have been trying to learn more about how to tell people about Jesus without turning them off. God has taught me so much on this journey! The first lesson he taught me was “God is Love.” I try to approach everything in my life with this in mind.
Through God and His church, I have learned how to be the best husband (married to Tyra for 25 years), father (six boys ranging from 29 to 10), and man that I can be. My vision is to help our Youth aspire to lead the same type of life with God at the center of it all!
In terms of Youth Ministry, I spent two years leading my Youth group back in Panama as a college-age youth. We saw that group grow by building a genuine community of kids that WANTED to hang out together and WANTED to worship together.
I also then spent 14 years as the Senior High Sunday School teacher at Lake Cities United Methodist Church. I grew a lot in this area, and was the consistent face through the changing of three youth directors. My favorite week each year was accompanying the youth Mission Trip for more than 12 years.
My philosophy on Youth Ministry is simple: Laugh a lot. Love a lot. Tell them about our awesome God! (And of course model all this for them)!
Kids want to have fun … me too! They want cool people to hang out with. And it is through fun, laughter, games, meals, conversations that we develop relationships. And it is through those relationships that we have an opportunity to share how following and loving God every day makes our life complete with His joy, peace, and LOVE.
If you are looking for a place for your 6th to 12th grader to hang out with some cool, down to earth people, feel free to send me a text or call me at 940-391-9250.
